Why do liberals buy foriegn cars and conservatives buy american

I would consider myself a liberal, and I fall into the category of buying foreign cars. I had a Honda, we currently have a honda, and when we discuss buying a new car, we talk about Honda, or Toyota, or Audi, etc. I don't even think about buying an american car, like a Ford, or a Chevy.

Yet, I feel it is a very liberal thought to want to buy groceries that are produced close to home, i.e. going to farmers markets, or Whole Foods, or whatnot.

Liberals flock to American Apparel clothing.

We believe in fair pay, and want to keep jobs in the US instead of shipping them to other countries where the workers are not treated fairly, even if it would save the company some money.

Why do these beliefs not transfer to buying American cars. I really don't have an answer here, I'm looking for some comments or feedback.

There's a stigma that a lot of American made cars are lacking in technology, don't last as long, and don't keep their resale value as well as Honda or Toyota...

I think there's some truth to some of it... The resale value is certainly true as you know from selling your Honda...

Maybe it's about quality right? You value the whole foods and local farmers because the quality is pure and natural. You value American Apparel because the quality is nice and the shirts are fit. You value a Honda, Toyota, and Audi because they are well done, quality vehicles.

I'm not convinced that it's "Buy American"...

Good observation. I don't know why the "liberal" is more apt to buy a Volvo or Saab or Honda.

I do think that cars and clothes are an expression of ideas one has about things: religious, political, social, etc.

I have known many wealthy men who have driven older non-status cars because of the high value they place on saving.

I guess every purchase is an expression of what we value weighed against our financial reality.

Which is just stating your question, which is, why do "liberals" place more value on the foreign car -- and the answer is -- I don't know.

Good question.
