Race Recap-Benbrook Half Marathon

Yea! I completed my goal. It feels so good. I finished the Benbrook half.

I have been nervous all week because I was having some pain in my inner thigh, and a pretty sore quad muscle. I didn't sleep very well the night before. I just wasn't sure how things were going to come together. I kept thinking...Ugh not again, I worked so hard, and the week of the race I start having trouble. Alas, Jake and I were up at 6:30am, early for us on a week day let alone a Saturday. We got to race about 7:30 for an 8:30am start. Once we got there, I did a little warm up and was having any pain at all much to my relief. I knew at that point I'd finish the race. I'd asked several people what to wear as I was a little unsure. All the feedback I got was shorts and a tee shirt. You better believe I was unsure of my decision when the car thermometer read 37 degrees. I was so thankful to have Jake there so I could stay as warm as possible until race time. My crew knew what they were talking about. I wouldn't have wanted any more clothing by about mile 3.

I started out to fast, I knew I was doing it to, and just couldn't stop myself. Honestly it's really difficult not to, I'm not a very fast runner, so when people were passing me left and right, and left and right again, it was hard not to want to speed up. I hope I've learned my lesson.

Due to my early speed racer pace, the last 3 miles were tough and it was pretty warm by then. But when I came around the last corner and heard my husband cheering my name, and jumping around, I got just enough extra energy to get across the finish line.

My goal for this race was just to finish, so I was pretty happy with my 2 hour and 13 minute finish. Heck I would have been happy with any time as long as I finished.

Tentative 3 Month Race Schedule

So I'm really liking this running thing.

I think that it keeps me motivated to exercise, even when I'm tired or it's cold or whatever excuse I can come up.

I think the excitement that surrounds a race, it's fun to have total strangers cheer you on.

I figure since I'm already in shape, I might as well keep it up and set some goals to complete a few more races, but I probably shouldn't get to crazy since it's been a while since I did more than one race a year. So I decided I'd do my race schedule in 3 month increments. Most people seem to plan out the whole year.

Here are my race goals for Jan, Feb, Mar

Jan 29th (next week) Benbrook Half Marathon my very first half marathon attempt.

Feb 26th Cowtown 10k I've done this 10k before. Should be fun and I think there will be a tweetup afterward.

March 27th Dallas Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon If all goes well next week, I think I'll try another.

That's it for right now. I'm contemplating the Nashville Half Marathon in April but not willing to buy plan tickets just yet.

100 things, the Big Finish!

In an attempt to create a little more space in our house, I have decided to embark on a modified version of the 100 things project.

I know you've all been waiting with baited breath to see the grand finale of the 100 things project. After Christmas, it seems that I need to focus on replacing things rather than getting rid of more stuff, the crooks did that for me.

Alas I still have 100 things of no use to me that I have
gotten ride of.

Here is the final pictures. All 100 things I got rid of. Most of it was donated, some was just flat thrown away.

A few reflections on this project:

I have a lot of stuff.

I could probably get rid of 100 more things, like extra hair clips I never use, or half full bottles of conditioner I decided I didn't like.

Why do we hold onto so much stuff?

Alas the project was cathartic and I may do it again.

Life has gone to the dogs!

Remember how in this post I said I'd get back to the dogs...

The week between Christmas and New Years proved to be eventful not just because we were lighted of much of our stuff. (Gives a whole new meaning to the 100 things project huh?)

Thursday of the week, Lucy and Bentley got into a major fight, and Lucy bit through Bentley's ear! Jake and I were outside, but on the other side of the house and we just heard this screeching. We ran around the house to see that Lucy had Bentley pinned and wasn't letting up. We ended up making an emergency trip to the vet for stitches. Now let me say that I think this was our fault. There had been a lot of stress around the house, and I believe that dogs can sense the mood of their owners. Plus Lucy had been showing us signs all morning that she had pent up energy. She was bringing us toys, and looking longingly at the leash, but we were too preoccupied to do anything about it..... Our Bad.

Friday evening, New Years Eve, we decided to stay in rather than go out as we had originally planned. I'd had about as much as I could take and wasn't ready to leave my hurt dog or my house alone for the evening. At bedtime we let the dogs outside to pee, and then they wouldn't come back in. Jake went out to get them, and Lucy spit out of tuft of hair..... He came in and said "Well, I think they got a cat" There are a million strays in the neighborhood so it's not that surprising.

Well Saturday Lucy started limping and was really lethargic. It wasn't better by Monday, in fact it was probably worse, so we scheduled another trip to the vet. Turns out she'd been bitten by that cat and now had an infection in her leg. She was pumped full of antibiotics and by the time I got home from work, she was like a whole new dog. Still limping a little, but totally different energy.

Two weeks later, life is sort of looking back to normal. Stitches has been removed, and both dogs are off their meds. Everyone seems in good spirits. I think we just needed to get the last of the bad juju out in 2010, and now we really can look forward to a new year. There have been positive steps already.

And then we were robbed

As I've already mentioned 2010 was not the best year for us. Let's recap shall we, mother's cancer, miscarriage, joblessness, depression, joblessness, and THEN WE WERE ROBBED.

We came home from our visit up north for Christmas to find that our house had been broken into and someone had removed pretty much every electronic device from our house, and seeing that my husband is a pretty big tech nerd, that was A LOT of stuff. Thankfully we have renters insurance.

Of course there are a lot of feelings surrounding something like this. Who did this to us?
Why? Oh did I mention they came in though my BEDROOM window. Some creepy dude was in the room, where I sleep. Yuck! Will I ever feel safe again? I am still working through a lot of these feelings, but am getting better day by day.

We are doing much better. Honestly friends we are recovering rather quickly. We reminded each other several times over that first week that it was just stuff, and we were both fine, as were our dogs.... oh the dogs.... I get back to that.

Part of the scariness is that we don't think it was totally random. We don't think we knew the people, but we suspect it was someone one was familiar enough with our routine to recognize the dogs were gone, and that even though our car was in the driveway we were not around. It also makes me scared to replace things. Who's to say the same people won't be back in a month to clean us out again.

Friends my advice to you is thus. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE RENTERS INSURANCE. We would be in such a different place with out it.

Finish up projects

I need to finish up my 100 things project, I have all the pictures taken and just need to get them posted. Maybe tomorrow....

Running update: Running has been going so well for me. I think the half marathon might be my distance, at least for a while. I really like getting out on Saturdays and pounding out 8-12 miles. There is something serene about it. I'm sure there are many of you who think I'm crazy, but I really enjoy know that for the next hour to two hours it's just me, my thoughts or my music and the pavement. I'm getting the competitive bug. My goal for my first half is just to finish. But after that, I'm all about trying to beat that. I did my first speed workout tonight with a running group I've started attending. My buns and quads are gonna be sore tomorrow.

Since I seem to love projects and seem to love to share them, I might move on to another once I finish up these two. A blogger I read does something called a Mighty Life list. It's basically a bucket list. I've got a few things on it so far, and maybe if I post it, I'll be encouraged to get in the planning stages of a few of them.

Just felt the need to update, you can go back to what you were doing now.

New Years Resolution

Looking forward to 2011:

What will be your new years resolutions for 2011?

Since it only took me 33 years to realize I don’t need to lose weight, and no matter how hard I try, the junk in my trunk isn’t going away, for the first time in my adult life, going on a diet isn’t on my new years resolutions list. So what is?

1) I need to realize that I am responsible for, and can control my reactions to things. Phrases like "she made me so mad" need to be banished from my vocabulary. I am in control of how I react.

2)I’m stealing this too. Embracing the life I have. I spend a lot of time wishing things…WISHING I made more money (don’t we all?)…Wishing I had more friends...Wishing my dogs were better behaved. I don’t want to wish my life away. I have a pretty sweet life right now and I need to embrace that.

3) Get our job, housing, and insurance situation in order, so we can move on to the things we are most excited about.

Which resolution are you most likely to break?
Probably number 1, old habits are hard to break, and I tend to react emotionally to things.

Which resolution are you most likely to keep?
Number 3.

Do you think things will be different in 2011?:
I really do. I don’t think all the challenges of 2010 are gone, but I feel like the horizon is a bit brighter... I feel like saying it can’t get worse, but that isn’t true and I don’t want to bring more hard times on myself.

What do you want most out of 2011?:
Can I say a baby? Resolution number 3 has to happen before we can take that challenge.

Do you think 2011 will be better than 2010?:
If there is a god in heaven I hope so.

What are you most looking forward to next year?
Calm, we’ve had enough storm over the past year.

What are you not looking forward to next year?
Job hunting again after my internship is done.

What change would you like to see in the world next year?
More acceptance and a lot less hate.

Time to Share, What will be your New Years Resolution this year? I'd love to hear it and support you in any way I can.
